An Ounce Of Prevention
I know that I’ve written before about the importance of inspection in seeing to it that your heating and air conditioning system continues to perform well for many years.
Regular inspection of the outside unit, the inside unit (or air handler), and the filters can save you considerably on your electricity bill.
The outside unit requires good air flow through its coils to release the heat from the inside of the house into the air outside. It is a heat pump. It literally pumps heat from inside to the outside. If the blower fans can’t cool the coils well enough , then not enough heat is lost to the outside air. That means the inside of your home may not be as comfortable on really hot days as it could be.
If there are are trees in the yard that shed, like cottonwood trees and paradise trees, the unit’s fins may become clogged fairly often. Pets sleeping near the unit can deposit fur on the coils, too. Those condenser fans are powerful air movers. They can suck much foreign debris into the unit and embed it there.
Don’t Forget The Filter
Inside the house has it’s own problems. The first thing to check often is the filter. This should be simple and easy to do. Try to get into a routine of changing the filter on a regular basis. Some times of the year may create more dust and debris than other times. Pet hair can also tend to clog the filter often. Keep extra filters on hand so this important job doesn’t get overlooked.

A filter should fit snugly into its housing, but on an older unit this may not be the case. If dust and hair can bypass the filter and go around its edges, the air handler will be the next thing that gets covered. The air handler can be pretty damp as it’s doing its job. This moisture naturally attracts and holds dirt that escapes the filter.
Clogged filters and clogged coil fins makes the fan motors work harder moving air through the house. harder work means it’s using more electricity than it needs to be.
So, the time and money spent do regular inspects will pay you back in the long run on lower operating costs and avoiding expensive repairs.

Absolutely on the mark here. Prior to buying our new home, we’d go years without any maintenance on our HVAC unit. It seemed to work “well enough”. After we bought a brand new home with a brand new AC unit, we’ve had an annual maintenance check up and I can’t believe the difference that it makes. It saves on our monthly energy bill too, so it’s worth the service call!

People tend to forget the importance of regular cleaning of their units, both central and window/portable.
